Ridin' the goddamn pony in the ghetto

Well. It took me damn long to get this blog thing sorted out. I didn't really read the instructions so I never checked the little agreement box and I ended up spending quite some time on the introduction page. Oh well. Life is hard.

Anywayzzz, I hope everyone's having a damn good time right now - especially with their massage treatments! The boys have become such girls now. I wonder whose influence that was? Our choir boys maybe? :)

Damn son, people should comment more on this blog! Just like people should write more on my Facebook wall...I've got a tiny goal for 4000 wallposts (I know, I'm sad and have no life), and I'm currently at 3820.

Well, I guess I really don't know what to write about so I'll just ramble on... I'm really hanging onto the hope that we'll all make new memories together so that it's not just SEALNet connecting us. But it's been a really fun ride with everyone, so a round of Chivas and Gold Label to you all.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll just do shout outs and I'll send you guys book e-mail sign thingies later...

Soooo. Onto the shout outs.

Charmaine: Thanks for having that Flaming Orgasm with me. We really have to experience another one together again and share the love with the rest of the world. You are one fucking badass slapper. We've really got to see more of each other when we're back at Stanford, especially becuase I'm stuck in Loro and you seem to be glued to Kimball. BTW, we shoulda seen those monkeys that day when we were first in Palembang because it woulda been better than smelling the stinky river. Also, Team Positive should stay away from venturing towards the negative side of spades. Hopefully next time we play with people who don't understand the game, we won't reach a new low. If not, I think it's time to give up. BTW, you coining up witgh the tapeworm thing was gneius.

Dian: Dididididididididku yang manis lucu dan imut. Jelek loe! Nggak juga sih. Umm, what to say yah? I really thanks you for all the work you've done on the project dude. Youz a gangsta. I give you permission to pencet-pencet and toel-toel me anyday of my life. EBF should be even better next yearrrr. Meep meep meeeeeep, and strange faces for you. I'll see you tomorrow, Dragonfly should be the shit, son. I also need to know wht your spotlight on was like so I'll be asking lots of weirder questions than normal. Wakakakakakakaka. Banyak kan ka nya? Aneh kan gw? Keren kan?

Eugene: Card perv. You thought this was a conservative country? Tsk tsk. Ridin' the fucking pony was awesome. Anddd, you demolished me today while throwing me in the pool. It was actually, in a really weird way, really really fun to hit the water like that. Hahahhaahahha. Also, thanks for beating us all completely during Egyptian Rat Screw. We really did get screwed over, you quick bastard. And as YF says, a "fuckign Russian whale." WTF. Also, great job trying to draw Jerri on the bus when we were playing Pictionary. Yeahhhhhh. I've got to admit, I admire how stretchy your skin is. If I ever need rubber bands, I'll ask for you :P

Jerri: YOUUU. (I hope I spelled Jerri right). You are so gangsta!!!! This trip really wouldn't have been the same without you. Somehow you make awkward situations and spotlight on so comfortable with your amazingly detailed sex questions. You helped me find my fantasy. *gropes you.* Anyway, it's been great getting to know you better especially cause we've mostly just smoked together and chilled a little at EBF last year. I wish you were there to see the wonderfully provocative dance moves by the 12 year olds who were humping each other. Good stuff. Good stuff. I'll see you in jkt?

John: You know, just as I was going to type this, the lights in my apartment building completely blew out. Way to go, death trap from 3rd world country :) So, King of Dodge, we should have another chair relay one of these days becuase that was damn fun, yah. Oh shit. the lights just blew out again. Hmm, I've cotnineud on my Autumnsong binge and since i've been home it's played 31 times, last time i checked on i tunes. I expect the little slapping game to be mega-popular in Ireland and Oxford. Spread the Asian culture like crumpets. Was the last slap a 10/10, I wonder. Don't forget to spread around Hiep's wonderful circle theory with their real purpose. Shit, son. Thanks for dealing with my dealings. 14 cards is almost 13 cards. Btw, I think I single-handedly deserve an award for bringing down Hotel Horison from 4 stars to 2 stars by not passing the microphone to you when we were singing. Stupid me. I watched the video today, complete with sound and it was fucking painful, yah. And you better make it on the Cali trip! Terence will bring his garden of mushrooms on the van!

Kim: I feel flushed too now. I think my flushing abilities came later on during the trip instead of ealrier on. Strange. I loved when you said "how do you know it's not a sex song but a masturbaiton song?" And great job making a discussion on anal sex look really classy from far away when we were all talking yesterday. We never got to be pool partners but that's fine I guess. The world would be better not seeing our wonderful abiliites. They'd be too shocked by our higher playing skills. I find it really amazing how many languages you know and it's always a lotta fun to find someone who really likes languages as well! And also, your wonderful metal voice has given me new found abilities in singing. Strangely, I think the quality of my voice seems better in metal than normal...

Lijing: YOU! Project co-leader, "corrupted" finance person and lost-mentor-group co-head. Damn son, it's a wonder we didn't get absolutely sick of each other :P Thanks for tolerating my sporadic panic attacks and my penchant to dress you up in headbands. Also, good job on flushign that hairy ass motherfucking caterpillar down the toilet. It was damn ugly and damn hairy. Thanks for making me the target of Operation Sober Patrol, but really, Sebastian? I can't think up of any hedgehog characters, but I'll get you back for that. It was interesting seeing those Oxford/Harry Potter suits you poor kids wear everytime you take exams. And really. S$15o board shorts? Taufiq getting you a chair so taht you won't have to sit on the floor? That deserves a real "wowwwwwwwwww." Btw, Nilda's sister? Pedophile. Also, 3-guys-1-girl? Tsk tsk.

Megan: Exhibit A? Exhibit B? Exhibit C? I hope you go through with the schedule and plans you've made for the rest of the trip. And yay! You were such an awesome roommate. And thanks for letting us all borrow your clothes. The Megan clothes party was so much fun that I couldn't decide on any one outfit. I still need to see how red you get and if you can be the lobster to my Sebastian. Thanks for being such an awesome project leader. You guys were all so accesible with both the projects and general group talks etc. So, wheeeee. I miss the kitteeeennnn. At least I didn't have the touch of death with that. You're so huggableeeeee. Hug Hug. You know you want to get me drunk in cold, heater-less conditions. *radiates heat*

Miloni: Hands. Hahahahahaha. I really never expected hands to be the deal-breaker. Because of that, I'm starting to notice guy's hands right now. Hmm. Hmmmmmm. Going to Vanny's everyday was a really interestingly unnutritious experience. And your reverse-wrapping bed skills are very useful for when you don't want the sheets dirty. It was always really funny wathicng how you made sure the inside of the bed was completely clean. What was the Indian topping for rice called again? That shit was good, son. Thanks for being Sober Patrol yesterday! I was hot as a fucking heater but at least I gave central heating to everyone.

Steven: Whoever coined up the sentence "Sucks to be Steven" was a genius. JK JK. But really. Box Fighter? Champion of the Poor? Whyyyy Steven, whyyyyyy? And I can't believe I'm gonna miss out on your Singapore experience!!!! So sad :( You really need to eat the Roti Prata over there. It's awesome. And whatever people say, peeling the Roti Prata apart is really the best way that you can eat it.Btw, it's so funny that whenever you sit down you end up sleeping. Haha. What a great Champion of the Poor you are. Thanks for supporting Lijing's idea that I was Sebastian by singing the song the damn crab sings. Tsk tsk. It was awesome seeing you get saved by a fucking fly while playing Idiot. hahahaha. That game was damn long and ended up being damn annoying man. Too bad we all couldn't get into the club in Palembang. That was pretty funny though.

Terence: "Good to know, good to know" and "Good shit." You've influenced the kids in a pretty bad way, haven't you? That's so awesome that we can meet up again in sg!! I still can't believe how much you know about perms and all that jazz. Have you learned Rasa Ini btw? I expect you to be really really good at it by the time I get to Sg. You have umm...11 days, son, so use them wisely. I slap your wound, son. I think when you get home, you should really take a shower, yah. It's very bad, yah, wearing the same army wifebeater everyday, yah. Terence bau, yah. Terence narsis, yah. Hahahaha, you seriously better make it on the Cali trip you know! It'll be sooo much fucking fun. We can camp out in a ghettoer van than Wisma Atlet, which sounds oddly comforting right now. Good job on trying to make poser photos with the cigarette yesterday. But just remember when looking at the photos: this is Dian. This is you.

Yongfeng: Monyetku, apa kabar? Holy shit this post is damn long man. Judo man! You've got to teach me some really cool tricks later so that I can not only slap but flip people over. So cool right? Your photo with Jerry was really the cream of the crop. I can't believe you agreed to get your eyelashes curled. Wtf d00d? Haha, thanks for tolerating my random frustrated outbursts and for leading the trip so well. Youz is almost gangsta. We really gotta meet up more at Stanford! Can't believe I've never seen you around. But then again, it's a really big campus. Ahhhhh. Oh shit, I finally understand why this blog is called Sekayu seals. The seals must be part of SEALNet. AHHHHHHHH. Wtf......Such a "..." moment. I hope your hair looks better in other pictures that you take. I can't imagine it getting worse. Such a picky child. :)

AHHHH. That was damn long, yah. I never knew I could talk so much.

BTW, here are some cool Indonesian songs if you guys ever want to listen to more:

Rasa Ini (of course): http://youtube.com/watch?v=847ViW9Pz8U
Kenangan Yang Terindah: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LowRhs3tUEM
Mungkin Nanti: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VUqRskVV_dE
Seberapa Pantas: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nV-ai7ehXno

And yah, they're all really corny, yah.

The Great Meeting & Getting To Know You

Its August 26th,
what would have been my friends 21st birthday had he not died-fucking life. I began this trip with a heavy heart. Dian and I had an early ass flight like 6am from Jakarta to Palembang. Dian stayed up all night doing some last minute work for the trip poor thing, she was scrambling around at the very last minute to pack...we finally left her house only to realize that she had forgotten her bank card. We turned around and went to get. Finally, we arrive at the airport thinking we would probably miss our flight. We had the intention of smoking a joint before hand but her parents were with us so we couldn't. As we went through security they stopped us because of the goddamn paint in my checked luggage...fucking airports. So we knew for sure we would miss our flight...some how though we didn't. Now the question was what to do with the joint? Well, in a moment of non-thinking I just shoved the cigarette pack down the front of my pants, thank god I had on a t-shirt....my heart was racing each time went through the numerous security checkpoints. It was definitely the most ballsy thing I've ever done.

We arrived in Palembang at 7am and waited for some more people to arrive, then we went to Pa Ade's house had snacks and started to get to one each other. YF, Dian, me, Miloni, Li Jing, Terence, John, and Charmaine were there, some people were missing but it was a pleasant time. We left and drove around Palembang on the way to our hotel, I saw many women precariously perched sideways on the back of motorcycles, one woman even held a very small child on her hip...I couldn't help but thinking of how terrible it would be if they crashed.

After leaving Pa Ade's house we checked into our hotel, Horizon. It's a gangsta ass place with beautiful rooms, a bar, and even a pool. I spent the afternoon with Terence, Li Jing, and John, teaching them how to play spades. We lounged by the pool talking-getting to know each other more. I told them about driving 12 hours like it was nothing-it was a merry time with much laughter. After Li Jing and I won at spades, we played hearts. It's funny how I always seem to end up with the boys playing cards and drinking.

We went out for dinner as a team, well all but Megan she would arrive the next morning...It was interesting-there's just something about fish with the heads still on that I can't seem to take. The driver's here keep calling me preman (gangster) because of my tats and lip rings, damn right son!

It's now August 27th,
we arrived in Sekayu today.
On the bus ride there I chilled and mourned for Matt in the front of the bus while the rest of the team played games and got rowdy together-it definitely sounded like they were having lots of fun, YAY!!!

Jumping right into the circle painting with Hiep was an interesting experience. At first, we expected about 15-20 students, then all of a sudden a swarm of students came there had to be like 150 of them. It was quite overwhelming. Eliza did an amazing job translating for Hiep. He seemed a little to controlling for my tastes, directing the kids a little too much in what was supposed to be creative expression. How could that bring people together like it was supposed to. The mayor of Sekayu joined us, we had gone to meet him earlier in what was supposed to be an informal meeting but turned out to be rows of people in uniforms. Dian had to give a speech in front of them all-she was nervous but as far as I know she did an amazing job.

After circle painting we relaxed a bit then met as a team to really discuss what we were going to be doing for the next week or so. Everyone provided great ideas and had really marvelous insights about ways to help this community. The leaders are absolutely amazing, and really lead everything well. We broke ourselves up into two groups: leadership and service (radio).
Radio: Kim, Dian, YF, Eliza, Steven, Eugene
Leadership: Megan, Li Jing, Terence, Charmaine, Miloni, John-John, and me

After our meeting, we relaxed some more and did spotlight on YF and Steven style. I was the one who pushed and pushed about the sexual/drug/taboo subjects (which would be the trend for spotlight on teeheeteehee). I felt it got everyone more comfortable and made the less racy questions much easier to answer.

At debrief, Hiep said he was disappointed in the lack of planning for the circle painting. Fucking bullshit goddamn asshole mother fucker. It really pissed me off because he seemed to somewhat blame us for something that was completely out of everyone's control

Anyways, thats been our time so far...it's been pretty fucking gangsta!!!!

Logistics Day From Hell

HOKAY. I don't think I've been assigned to post on this blog, but I will anyway, for 2 reasons:
1. I FINALLY have some down time!
2. The more posts, the better, no? Whoever was assigned for today, feel free to post something else (especially if you'd like to write a review of Sekayu Sports Championship, most of which I had to miss, boo) and I'll be more than happy to blog again on another day.

So, today was set to be a logistical nightmare. I had been nervous all night since I wrote out our bus schedule and the list of little but crucial details that needed to be done in between.

I'm happy to say that pretty much everything has gone according to plan, albeit a few of them at the very last minute.

I was a little frantic this morning--the bus was late, some of the kids were still showering 20 minutes after they were supposed to leave, me oversleeping an hour.. FET! But I think everything fell into place once we got the gears turning, and I'm pretty happy about how all of the projects have turned out. We had a fabulous time at SD Muara Teladan (the children were adorable) and from what I saw, S2C seemed like it was a huge success! Hell fucking YEAH.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone on the team for doing their part to ensure everything ran smoothly and make my life easier. Special thanks to...

  • Miloni for saving my ass at the photocopy center this morning, the center's flash drive was nowhere to be found and important papers were successfully printed thanks to her fabulous, hot pink thumb drive.
  • John-John and Miloni for being super understanding about the candy situation and settling for a few boxes of our abundant supply of peanuts.
  • Eugene and Kim for running over to the radio station on your own to hand over the sound clip.
  • Lijing and Eliza (and whoever else it was) for buying the poster papers yourself, it was nice to have one more thing crossed off the shopping list.
  • My lovely co-leaders Mister Potato and Ms. Chiou for taking off some of my load when it was most hectic--taking care of sick Dewi Sartika, buying food for the team, dropping stuff off at the tournament.
  • The radio team for somehow getting the bus driver to pick them up from SMA 2 when I had completely forgotten to tell the driver to (I called him in a panic at 5PM when I remembered, and he told me he had already dropped them off at the Bundaran--that was a pleasant surprise)
All of you guys have been super supportive, yay team!

Rain

4 September '07

Since I always start project debriefs with single words about how people felt, I thought my blog entry should also be made up of simple words/phrases:

- Rain
- Playing in the rain
- Fund-raising pitches to Bupati YF
- Sick high school students
- Lijing's open session

Today was a day that, in Charmaine's words, "Shit got done." So I guess that sort of makes everyone happy. :)

Pimpin Press

8-31-07

In the morning, the cool, exclusive radio group went to the marketplace to interview some people about sanitation. When we got off, all thoughts of inconspicuous interviewing disappeared. Why? We have a stocky white guy with his sunglasses on, taking pictures, and jutting out his pointy nose and chin. Next to him stands a female who, if being white wasn't enough, towered over all the the traditional taxi cab drivers asking for her money. And then there's the asian dude who can't walk through the market without hunching because the locals didn't string the overhanging tarp high enough.

Back at the hotel, everyone poked fun at Terrance again because his 'blog' sounded like 'bloke' which also sounded like 'block.' Then there was a conversation with the children where they said Eugene looked like batman because of his pointy nose and chin. A 'rare product' they exclaimed. And while some sort of 'fan club' has been formed to celebrate this 'rare product' there are also several other girls who keep their distanse because they are scared of his uniqueness. Or so they say.

Quote of the day:
Lijing: "When I saw Nilda's sister today, it was so breathtaking. She wore a tudong and her face was so innocent and pure.:

P.S. While lijing is rather uptight with cleanliness and perhaps proud of his observations with megan's wardrobe, it hadn't escaped me that he wore the same flowery board shorts for 3 straight days.

Sekayu's New Clothes

Megan changed her clothes again today. If you've seen her during the first three days you'll know that's a new record. So it was a wispy grey dress, empire cut and billowy in the wind. It was quite the improvement over yesterday's outfit. A fresh application of eyeliner got me wondering whose eye she hoped to catch.

Sealnet thinks Sekayu needs a makeover too. Everywhere you walk there's either a half-built home; a half-paved street; a half-cleaned river; and villages which betray their desire for change with the basic trappings of modern life. My group hopes to prevent the weekend outflow of inhabitants to the more interesting city of Palembang three hours drive away. They hope to achieve this with a sports carnival held every month. It should be a laughing, cheery day; a bright summer dress to catch the wandering eyes of the people.

I do not doubt the first carnival will be a success. What I do doubt is whether the energy exists to sustain the project. What I do doubt is how the rusticity of a bright summer dress can measure up to the slinky seduction of the city. Cities need new clothes sometimes. But they can't change as easily as people do, and neither can they discard unwanted clothes as carelessly.

Megan's finished her shower and now she's wearing a dark blue short-sleeved top with shorts.
